The Mont Gerbier des Joncs

Mont Gerbier des Joncs, the most famous volcano in France

Culminating at an altitude of more than 1,550 metres, France’s most famous volcano owes its fame to the longest river in France, the Loire, which rises at the foot of it. The climb to the top of Mont Gerbier de Jonc is quite short but intense (about 150 metres of climbing) so don’t leave without good walking shoes and a bottle of water.

After the effort, the comfort: the top of the Mont offers hikers an unobstructed view of the Cévennes and the Monts d’Ardèche. From there, you can enjoy a well-deserved break and why not a picnic while admiring the surrounding volcanic land. And, of course, visit the source of the Loire River, which rises at Mont Gerbier des Joncs in the form of a stream. A precautionary measure to keep in mind on the day: make sure that the weather is good before starting the climb, as the rocks along the route can be slippery in wet weather.

Climbing Mont Gerbier de Jonc requires suitable clothing and footwear for a nature outing. Remember to be well equipped before you leave!
